Tickets £5 from the Penarth Pavilion

12 (noon) Saturday 13 June Taliesin Square (where Xmas tree and carols were) Picnic, songs & history

Bring a collapsible garden chair & a picnic (Derek will provide beautiful weather), we will then be entertained by a female choir who will sing in aid of WaterAid. Then about 2.30 Alan Thorne will tell us about the history of the neighbourhood.
Free event, donations at your discretion

7pm for 7.30 start Wednesday 17 June The new Pilot: pub quiz

This breathtaking and exciting event is hosted by Lesley and Greg – hold on to your sides
Participation £2 towards funds for the newsletter

Marina in Bloom (“MiB”) is back..Bloom up!

We are again participating in the Royal Horticultural Society Wales in Bloom – It’s Your Neighbourhood. You can understand why we abbreviated it to Marina in Bloom or MiB. The inspectors will be walking around the neighbourhood judging us during the two weeks 6-17 July. That means that we must prepare during June.
Please tidy up the outside around your property, clear away any weeds, and plant flowers. If relevant, please ask your management company to time their work schedule in anticipation of the judges. We were marked down last year because some areas were in desperate need of maintenance. Judith has said that she will install special planting along Terra Nova Way to commemorate our 150th Anniversary. Your management companies may be able to do something special as well. Please let me know so that we can publicly thank them too.

So is that it for our 150th Anniversary celebrations?  No!  That is only the aperitif. The real fun is yet to come. It is so hot that it requires its own email. Hold on to your socks because they will be blown away. Watch out for the next email.

Very best wishes,

Martin

Dear friends and neighbours,

Here is a poster for this Sunday’s Marina Open Day. I hope that you will all be able to join in the fun. There is also the chance to become a film star. A film is being made on the history of Penarth Docks and this open day will form part of it. Discovery, fame, glamour and riches await you on Sunday.

Don’t tell anyone but they will also be filming us having fun on Saturday June 13when we will all be in Taliesin Square (where we sang Christmas carols) to listen to the history of our neighbourhood told by Alan Thorne. I don’t think that there is anything about Penarth history that he does not know! To make the event more exciting we could start about noon and bring a picnic. There is a women’s choir for WaterAid who would like to entertain us with songs. I’ll have a strong word with Derek about sorting the weather out for us. I will let you know all the details of this event in about one week’s time. In the meantime, I’ll see you on Sunday.

Dear Residents,

Please forward this message to all of your friends and neighbours. As we come towards the end of 2014, we are determined to see it out with a bang! Here is what we have planned for you.

Wednesday 19 November
Pub quiz hosted by Rob in The Pilot from 6.45pm for a 7pm start.

Wednesday 10 December
Pub quiz hosted by Anne in The Pilot from 6.45pm for a 7pm start, sharp as…

Xmas dinner in The Pilot at 8pm. You can see the menu here:
http://knifeandforkfood.co.uk/Pilot%20Christmas.htm?m=1&open_2=1&first_1=1

It is three courses for £22.50. Following our quiz, this will be a great celebration and a fantastic opportunity to catch-up with familiar faces and make new friends. Jollity and fun guaranteed.
The Pilot need a £10 deposit from each of us, so please make cheques payable to The New Pilot and post them through Lesley’s letter box (15 Penarth Portway) and Lesley will coordinate with The Pilot. Please print your name & email address on the back of your cheque so that Lesley can acknowledge your payment. Don’t put it off, ensure your place and rush your cheque to Lesley.

Wednesday 17 December – Carols on the Quay
7.30pm Carol singing in Plas Taliesin square on the northern side of the marina outer basin. Please bring your flasks of mulled wine and mince pies. Last year this event was cancelled because of bad weather so this year we need everybody there to sing their hearts out. Those who are tone deaf can join me and croak along. No excuses, hope to see you there.

The band have been booked, thanks Chrissie for this. I have confirmed with Seel & Co. that they are going to erect a Christmas tree in the square, thank you Peter for organising that. I have spoken with Stuart in the Marina office and he has a temporary shelter he can erect if the weather forecast is not so good. Stuart is also going to light up his offices this year and will arrange a lights competition amongst the berth holders so many of the boats will be lit up. The evening will be magical.

We have done a lot and achieved a lot this year. Help us set an even harder target to follow next year by showing your support and attending these last events of the year.

Many thanks and if I don’t get a chance of saying to you personally, please have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and prosperous new year,

Martin

Dear friends and neighbours,

Some of our activities have taken a holiday for the month of August but they will all be back in September. We will not have a walk, pub quiz night or dinning club in August. The book club never stops, so keep reading throughout August. I look forward to seeing everybody in September, especially those who have not braved their first activity with us. Remember, everybody is friendly and there is only one rule: have fun!

We do need your help. We have reached the stage when we must plan our celebrations for our 150 anniversary in June next year. We need people to pick up an idea and with other volunteers make it happen. The sort of ideas we have for celebrations are:

Games & competitions
Arts & Crafts
Flower & Produce competitions
Food

We need volunteers to help take these ideas (and others?) forward to make them happen. Remember, our teams of volunteers have only one rule: have fun! Please, please offer your time, help and advice. Reply to me now so that you do not forget.

Thank you, please pass this message on to all of your friends and neighbours
Very best wishes,

Martin

Our next quiz is not to be missed on Wednesday at 7pm for a 7.30 start in The new Pilot. Fun and laughs guaranteed.

Most of our interest groups have launched. If you missed out and want to join in then just email and tell me which groups and I will put you in contact with them (PenarthM@gmail.com).

The Book Club met and have chosen their first book to read, a thriller. The restaurant group will be going to their first dinner out later this month, a controversial choice that will stimulate conversation.

The first walk will be led by Anne and is a ‘gentle’ walk around the Bay. Normally I hobble round it in 90 minutes but this walk will be slower with the chat and a stop over the other side for refreshment. Participants will meet this side of Pony y Werin bridge at 10.30 on Sunday 8 June. This is one for your diary.

The Marina is holding an open day on Sunday 25 May with free entrance. During the day there will be demonstrations by the Sea Cadets, stand up paddle boarding, kayaks and more. There will be an early evening BBQ (£5 ticket). This is a great opportunity for residents who are not berth holders to see life on the pontoons.

Don’t forget, if you missed out or you want to start a new group just email me. I look forward to seeing you all at the quiz on Wednesday,
Very best wishes,

Martin
